Five rainy-day projects from the Crew Crafts library
When a nor’easter keeps everyone inside, a few household supplies can turn into an afternoon of paper boats and watercolor lighthouses.

Rainy afternoons on the South Shore have a way of stretching out. These five projects from our Crew Crafts library use supplies most families already have, and each one is easy to set up and clean up.
Watercolor lighthouses
Draw a tall lighthouse and a few waves in crayon, then paint over it with watercolor. The crayon lines appear through the paint like magic. Best for ages 4 to 8.
Paper sailboats
Decorate a sheet of paper first, then fold it into a boat and float it in a shallow tub. Always stay right beside children near water, even a little.
Paper snowflakes
Fold, snip, unfold. Coffee filters work beautifully. Younger kids can tear shapes instead of cutting.
Orchard apple stamps
A grown-up halves a few apples; kids dip them in washable paint and stamp a harvest print. Check for fruit allergies first.
Windowsill seed cups
Plant a couple of bean seeds in paper cups and watch them sprout over the week. Seeds are a choking hazard for little ones, so supervise closely.
A note for parents
Crew Crafts are always optional. If you’d like your sitter to try one, have the listed supplies ready and let them know when you book.
