Fall weekends around town

Apple picking, farmers markets, library story times, and harvest fairs: a simple guide to autumn with little ones on the South Shore.

Autumn might be the best season to be a kid on the South Shore. Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend a crisp weekend morning, most of them free or close to it.

Market mornings

Many of our towns host weekend farmers markets through the fall. Bring a small bag and let kids pick one thing each to take home. Check your town’s website for this season’s dates and hours.

Story time at the library

Local libraries run free story times and seasonal programs for toddlers and preschoolers. They’re a lovely, low-key way to meet other families in town.

Pick your own

A short drive gets you to orchards and farm stands. Go early, wear boots, and pack wipes. Sticky hands are part of the fun.
